Barton Nature Area and Viewing Area in Ann Arbor
This 98-acre natural gem is giving water views and a slice of local history just minutes from downtown.
Perched along the Huron River, Barton Dam has been generating clean energy since 1912 while creating the scenic Barton Pond that provides a good chunk (85%) of Ann Arbor’s drinking water.
What’s Here?
(1) Diverse Ecosystems:
Take a stroll through prairie, marshland, wet meadows, and forests all in one visit. This mix of environments makes for the perfect home to a wide variety of plants, birds, and butterflies.
(2) Wildlife Watching:
Bring your binoculars! Over 80 bird species and 62 butterfly species have been spotted here, making it a hotspot for nature photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.
(3) River Access
Launch your kayak or canoe from spots above or below the dam (Gallup Park Livery offers boat rentals.) This stretch is part of the Huron River Water Trail, and serves as a launching point for Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Barton to Gallup river trips.
(4) Hit the Trail
The half-mile main trail connects two bridges with side trails available for longer adventures. For the best experience, take the pedestrian walkway over the dam for pretty views of the water flowing below.
The riverside viewing area really is a nice spot to watch the water flow, though if you go in the winter be careful because it does get slippery. Summertime is perfect for hitting up a picnic spot.
