Vicinity in Grand Rapids

Vicinity Energy runs the downtown district energy system in Grand Rapids, piping steam, hot water, and chilled water to more than 100 buildings including hospitals, universities, and hotels.

Their 7 miles of underground pipes make heating, cooling, and even snowmelt more efficient, and by 2026 they’ll add a 9MW electric boiler to deliver carbon-free steam as part of the city’s sustainability goals.
