Scrapfest in Lansing
What is ScrapFest?
ScrapFest is Lansing’s coolest trash-to-treasure event—part art competition, part eco-friendly block party. What started as a scrap metal sculpture showdown has grown into a full-blown summer festival in Old Town, spotlighting upcycled artwork, live music, eco-art vendors, and hands-on fun for all ages.
How the Competition Works
Artists get one hour to pick through scrap metal at Friedland Industries—up to 500 lbs of it—then they’ve got a month to turn that pile into something awesome.
The finished sculptures hit Turner Street in mid-July for a public art auction.
Proceeds go back to the artists (70%), to the fest (20%), and to a local cause (10%).
Festival Features
ScrapFest isn’t just about sculptures. It’s a full weekend of:
-
Eco-art booths with upcycled and handmade goods
-
Live music and street eats
-
The Great Scrap Run 8K + Family Fun Run
-
A wildly creative Refashion Show (yes, that’s wearable art made from junk)
-
Kid-friendly activities and community vibes all day long
DocuSeries + Real Impact
ScrapFest is also rolling out a DocuSeries (think Chef’s Table meets Abstract) that goes behind the scenes with featured artists.
Bonus: a portion of auction proceeds goes to local charities that make Lansing stronger. Past partners include Lansing SAVE and other community orgs that could use a little spotlight.
