Memorial Poppy Fields in Fennville
If you’re anywhere near Fennville in June, this hidden field of red, white, and blue poppies is worth the detour. Tucked just beyond the pine trees next to the Fennville Cemetery, this four-acre bloom is beautiful and it’s deeply meaningful.
This memorial field was planted by Joan Donaldson and John Van Voorhees in honor of their son, Mateo. He was a beekeeper on their Pleasant Hill Blueberry Farm before serving in Afghanistan. When he came home with PTSD and later passed away, they created this space as a tribute—to him, to the bees he loved, and to lift up others carrying similar grief.
