Animals Field Trips

John Ball Zoo is a favorite local spot for animal lovers, families, and adventure seekers.

Home to over 2,000 animals, this zoo blends up-close wildlife experiences with interactive fun. You’ll find big-ticket animals like lions, tigers, chimpanzees, and bears, plus hands-on encounters like feeding the budgies or brushing a goat in the petting corral.

Beyond the animals, the zoo offers zip lines, ropes courses, and a funicular ride with great views of Grand Rapids. They are also home to the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival.

Zoo’s 10 Year Master Plan

John Ball Zoo is leveling up. Their 10-year Master Plan is all about bigger habitats, better animal care, and more ways for people to connect with wildlife. They’re making the zoo more accessible, adding cool new experiences, and working toward being open year-round.

Here’s what’s in the works:

  • Giraffes are coming! A new African exhibit will bring giraffes to the zoo, complete with feeding opportunities.
  • Massive indoor South American forest with birds, reptiles, and mammals—one of the biggest in North America.
  • Sea lions return with a brand-new habitat, underwater viewing, and a rooftop café.
  • Year-round fun—the zoo is working toward staying open in every season.
