Black Dog Books and Records in Grand Rapids

Black Dog Books and Records

959 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids MI 49503
(630) 291-1503

Black Dog Books and Records is a well-regarded independent used bookstore and record shop, located just a few doors down from Van’s Pastry Shoppe in GR’s Midtown neighborhood.

This spot leans a little punk, a little poetic, and a whole lot thoughtful.

What’s on the Shelves

You’ll find stacks of used books, vinyl, cassettes, Blu-rays, and the occasional VHS, all lined up for readers, music junkies, and anyone who still loves holding their media in their hands.

Shop here for a good read, sure, but know that this spot puts a focus on leftist philosophy and lit that doesn’t follow the mainstream script. It’s a go-to for folks digging into political and exploring different POVs.

They Buy Books & Media, Too

How it Works

Bring your books (or records, tapes, and movies) into the shop. Staff will give them a once-over and make an offer on what they can use. Anything they don’t take heads back home with you. They’re not a drop-off site and can’t recycle or haul things away.

They’ll look at up to 20 boxes in-store if you make an appointment, and for bigger hauls, they’ll consider house calls within about 60 miles of Grand Rapids.

What They’re After

Bring on the weird, the radical, the poetic. They’re especially into:

  • Philosophy

  • Labor studies

  • LGBTQ studies

  • Women’s studies

  • Black studies

  • Horror

  • Poetry

  • Art, design, and architecture

  • True crime

  • Fresh, current fiction
