Besser Natural Area is a laid-back slice of woods and shoreline tucked off a quiet road north of Alpena.
It’s got peaceful trails, virgin pines (tall, OLD pines that have never been logged), beach access, and the crumbling remains of an old ghost town hidden in the trees.
Snorkel to a Shipwreck
Besser Natural Area is the place for a true Lake Huron adventure – snorkel or kayak off shore to a shipwreck!
The wreck of the Portland, a 150-foot schooner from 1863, sits in shallow water just 250 feet offshore, in good weather and water conditions, parts of the wreck are easy to see.
