Bear River Valley Recreation Area in Petoskey

Bear River Valley Recreation Area

401 East Mitchell St, Petoskey MI 49770
Hiking

Bear River Valley Recreation Area is one of downtown Petoskey’s best surprises. A whitewater river runs right through town, with trails on both sides that are perfect for walking, biking, or snowshoeing.

What to Expect

There’s a 1.5-mile path along the river, with pedestrian decks, restrooms, and tons of spots to just stop and take in the view. Birding is big here, and if you’re lucky, you might even find a Petoskey stone along the trail.

Kayakers will love the 1/4 mile whitewater course, the only one like it in the lower peninsula. Fishing is popular too, especially near the dam close to the river’s mouth.

Location Details

Start at 101 East Lake Street. The trail runs between Lake and Sheridan streets, right through the heart of town.
