A Bloom Worth the Drive

We Michiganders know our state is full of natural beauty—from Lake Michigan beaches and U.P. waterfalls to colorful fall trails and snow-covered woods.

But tucked away in Fennville is a sight that catches even lifelong Michiganders by surprise.

The Memorial Poppy Field at Pleasant Hill stretches for acres with vibrant red and blue blooms that almost look too beautiful to be real. And while the photos are incredible, seeing it in person is an experience all its own.

Here’s what makes this flower field so special, the story behind it, and when to plan your visit.

Deep Rooted Story In Every Bloom

Located in Fennville, the Memorial Poppy Field is part of Pleasant Hill Blueberry Farm, owned by Joan Donaldson and John Van Voorhees. Beyond its beauty, the field carries a deeply meaningful story.

It was planted in memory of their son Mateo, who was a beekeeper on their farm prior to serving in Afghanistan. Upon returning, he struggled with PTSD and later died. They created this space as a tribute—to him, to the bees he loved, and to lift up others carrying similar grief.

The poppies bloom just across from the cemetery where he is buried, giving the space a quiet, reflective presence.

Despite the weight of its meaning, the field feels full of life. Bees and butterflies move through the blooms, helping pollinate the surrounding blueberry crops.

It’s a place where remembrance and renewal exist side by side.

Expectations

There are just two requests from the owners: don’t walk through the flowers and don’t pick them.

The field spans about four acres. Visitors are welcome to walk around the perimeter, where the views shift beautifully from every angle.

For photos, lighting makes a big difference. Early morning and evening tend to offer the best conditions. Anyone interested in scheduling a photo shoot should contact the farm in advance.
