Yes, Ice Skating Trails Are a Thing & They’re Amazing

Ice skating on a rink? Cool.

Ice skating on a trail? Now we’re talking.

This year, Great Lakes region is serving up some seriously cool ice skating trails that wind through forests, curve around city skylines, and even roll over gentle hills.

In the last year alone, two new ice skating trails have opened up in the Great Lakes – one in Michigan, and one in Wisconsin. That brings us to a whopping seven ice skating trails, making up a small but mighty line up that we think you’re gonna dig.

These trails take you through pine forests under the stars, past the Chicago skyline, across downtown Holland with fire pits at every turn, and even over six miles of frozen Minnesota wilderness. One might just be the longest skating trail in the entire country. So, here’s where to lace up your skates for a winter adventure that’s a little out of the box and a whole lotta fun.

Ready to Lace ’em Up?

What’s more Great Lakes than heading out for a good solid skate, right? Do check conditions and hours before heading out. We know that Mother Nature still calls the shots.

And you already know this, but here’s a reminder anyway: dress in layers (you’ll warm up once you start moving), bring gloves and helmets for the kids, and try to arrive early on busy weekends for the best ice and smallest crowds.

Most importantly? Bring hot chocolate money. You’re going to want it.
