Best Things to Do in New Buffalo, Michigan

New Buffalo Public Beach Overlooking The Marina

New Buffalo, The Michigan Beach Town Chicago Loves

New Buffalo is a small but buzzy Lake Michigan beach town tucked into Michigan’s southwest corner. Photo ready, it lives its life as a charming, curated Midwest weekend resort town that’s an easy escape from Chicago.

With it’s foodie- and wine-focused offerings, it’s definitely one of the better weekend getaways in the Midwest for beaches, wineries, breweries, and bachelorette parties.

People call it the “Hamptons for Chicago” or sometimes the “Hamptons of the Midwest,” which feels about right. There are sailboats in the harbor, cocktails with lake views, winery tours, and the occasional price tag that makes you briefly consider picking up a second job. But unlike many Lake Michigan beach towns that mostly hibernate after Labor Day, New Buffalo has enough wineries, trails, restaurants, and nearby attractions to keep things moving year-round.

(On our visit, we had to double-check that we were actually in the state of Michigan because ours was the only Michigan license plate we saw all weekend. Case in point: several business owners told us their summer crowds are overwhelmingly from Chicago, with Indiana a close second.)

No matter, you can think of New Buffalo as one giant public beach, one busy harbor, and one downtown that keeps all of the action within a few blocks. (There’s even an Amtrak stop right downtown!)

Things to Do in New Buffalo

What surprised us most was how easy it is to get around New Buffalo.

We parked the car and mostly forgot about it for the weekend, which is not something I say often. Whittaker Street is basically the town hub. Restaurants, shops, coffee spots, bars, they’re all lined up along a half-mile stretch that leads straight to the water. Walk down the street, cross the bridge, and you’re standing at the beach.

Downtown – Whittaker Street

Whittaker Street is where EVERYTHING is in New Buffalo. If you are looking for one of their famous restaurants, it’s probably on this street. Same goes for all the shopping places and cocktail spots. Lots of people get food drinks and then walk to the beach to watch the sunset.

One fun stop is Sweetwater Boating Supplies. Yes, it’s technically a boating store. It’s also shop two stories full of touristy stuff like keychains and tons of New Buffalo tees and sweatshirts, and a surprisingly big selection of toys. It’s a fun one to walk through just to see what random thing turns up. FB page

New Buffalo Public Beach

New Buffalo Public Beach is perfect for for swimming, sunsets, and the playground.

The public beach is a pretty one, and it’s even prettier at sunset, which is when we went.

It sits right next to the harbor channel, so you get to watch the boats head out to Lake Michigan and come back in for the evening while you’re sitting on the sand.

A few boardwalk overlooks climb above the beach for wider views, and if you’ve got kids along, there’s a playground right there too.

Harbor & Oselka Marina

Take a few minutes to walk the harbor and marina area, because it’s a great spot to watch the parade of boats come and go.

If you’re looking to get out on the water, Oselka Marina is one of the area’s main hubs and the best way to figure out how to spend a day on Lake Michigan.. You can book fishing charters, sailing excursions, captained cruises, boat rentals, jet ski rentals, and more.

Even if you don’t rent a thing, though, the marina is worth a visit.

Fishing charters, New Buffalo Sailing excursions,

We had a lot of fun taking in the waterfront houses, especially the condos with boat parking out front. Instead of pulling your car up to the house, you pull up your boat.

Outdoors & Nature Things to Do

Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park is one of southwest Michigan’s go‑to beach parks and campgrounds, right on Lake Michigan, that really nails that classic Lake Michigan beach day vibe. It is a big, 1,900 acre mix of wide sandy beach, tall dunes, and wooded trails, and fun things to do.

The surprise MVP for us was the row of food trucks parked right on the sand. We counted six on our visit, including a smoothie truck and an ice cream truck, which was pure genius when we were hot and dying for something cold.

The dunes themselves are pretty and make a great backdrop. The beach, though, is huge, with tons of parking and three restrooms, so there is plenty of space to spread out and you do not feel crammed in even on busy days.

If you want to earn that post beach nap, this is also a sandboarding spot, so you can hike up a dune and ride your way down. There is a big day use area, picnic spots, and a modern campground tucked back from the lake, so you can make it a quick swim stop or a full weekend base camp. And if you are coming from the Indiana side and do not feel like crossing the state line, the Indiana Dunes give you a similar big beach and dune experience.

Galien River County Park

Galien River County Park is a little hidden adventure spot just outside New Buffalo, and it is absolutely worth the stop.

The star of the show is the 300 foot canopy walk that takes you out above the treetops and marsh. From there, it leads into a 600 foot boardwalk that stretches you right out into the wetland, with 60 foot high marsh overlooks where you can just stand and take in the whole river valley. The trails are designed to be accessible, so it is an easy place to bring kids, older family members, or anyone who does not want a hardcore hike but still wants real nature.

Down closer to the water, there are fishing platforms that make it simple to drop a line without bushwhacking your way to the riverbank. Even if you are not fishing, those spots are perfect for just hanging out, watching the water, and listening to the birds. Overall, it has that sweet spot vibe of “short walk, big payoff.”

Kayak Rentals (3rd Coast Paddling)

If you’d rather get on the water, 3rd Coast Paddling rents kayaks right by the marina, next to the New Buffalo boat ramp. We didn’t make it out this trip, but it’s first on the list for next time.

Boating, Fishing & Lake Cruises (Oselka Marina)

For something bigger, Oselka Marina is your hub. You’ll find fishing charters and New Buffalo sailing excursions, plus captained cruises, captained boat rentals, drive-yourself boat rentals, and jet ski rentals.

Vineyard & Brewery Trails

New Buffalo sits in the heart of wine country, so this is a big part of the area’s appeal.

The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail strings together wine stops across the region. Dablon Vineyards is a solid winery to put on the list.

And as far as the ale side, Ghost Isle Brewery covers bee, and Journeyman Distillery in nearby Three Oaks handles the spirits.

If you’d rather not pick a designated driver, a couple of wine tour outfits, Grape and Grain and Fruitful Vine, will do the driving for you.

Food & Drink for Everyone

You will not go hungry in New Buffalo. Here’s the rundown.

Redamak’s

The classic. Redamak’s is famous for hamburgers as big as your face, and it’s the spot a lot of people credit with putting New Buffalo on the map. If you make one old-school stop, make it this one.

Hummingbird Lounge

Hummingbird Lounge Cocktail
Cocktails at the Hummingbird Lounge

This was the big surprise of the trip. Hummingbird Lounge lives in an old Victorian house, and the setup is half the fun, with different rooms to dine in, a patio, and an event space (a popular one for bachelorette parties). It started as a cocktail bar and only recently added food, but the food is incredible. Everything we tried was delicious. The owner told us the menu is built around a Midwestern American feel with simple, easy-to-read ingredients, and he’s proud that guests can actually understand what they’re ordering. The cocktails are worth it too. We tried a spritz flight that was light and easy even for someone who doesn’t really drink.

Farmette

Part coffee shop, part bakery, part local grocery, and somehow all of it works. The iced coffee might be the best we’ve ever had, which is saying something coming from someone who never knows what to order. The grocery side is stocked with locally sourced produce, baked goods, sandwiches, flowers, and fun Michigan goodies, with a big garden out back to back up the farm-to-table thing. There’s seating everywhere, inside and out, including spots around fire pits, and it’s dog-friendly outside. It’s wildly popular, so expect a wait if you go early in the day. We slipped in about an hour before close and had the place nearly to ourselves.

PostBoy

A genuine hotspot with a retro streak. You can buy merch out of a vintage van, there’s a big outdoor patio with live music, and the bar wraps all the way around with seating half inside and half outside. The menu is “innovative and globally inspired,” which means it’s adventurous, so picky eaters may want to scan it before sitting down. It’s busy basically every time we walked past, so make a reservation, especially if you want a seat outside.

The Stray Dog Bar and Grill

A reliably packed spot known for its rooftop deck. Quick note: the rooftop views are a little blocked by the fencing around the deck, so you can’t quite see the harbor from your table without standing up. It’s a fun, lively place though, and the move is to show up right when it opens if you want a seat on the roof.

Beer Church

We didn’t eat here, but it was packed every single time we drove past, and the exterior alone makes you want to stop. Fair warning, it runs on the pricier side.

Rios

The best authentic Mexican in the area, and it has a drive-thru, which is dangerous in the best way. It’s a casual, popular spot serving street food like tacos, burritos, and nachos, with huge portions and great chips. There’s indoor and outdoor seating. Order at the kiosk or cashier, grab a pager, and your food turns up fast. Or, you know, just drive through.

Oink’s Ice Cream

A pig-themed institution that’s been scooping for over 40 years, and the nostalgia is a big part of the draw. There’s the ice cream shop on one side and a candy, fudge, chocolate, and gift shop on the other, loaded with pig-themed souvenirs and a few fun photo ops. It gets crazy busy, but the number system keeps it moving (think Meijer deli counter: grab a number, wait for your call). The inside is pure “pig hoarder,” with knick-knacks everywhere you look.

A couple more worth a mention: Song Asian Cuisine is the go-to for a sit-down Asian meal, and David’s Delicatessen and Coffee is an easy stop for a deli sandwich and a cup of coffee.

Rainy Day Ideas

If the weather isn’t cooperating or you just need a break from the sun,hte New Buffalo Railroad Museum and the nearby Hesston Steam Museum are solid respites. Both are train-focused, with history and even rides for the railroad-curious.

Other indoor options in New Buffalo:

Schuler Farms, about 20 minutes out, is a dairy stop and part of our Michigan creamery tour.

Shuler Farms Aerial View

Elsie Earl Studios is a fun place to paint, with art activities for kids too.

Fernwood Botanical Garden is about a 30-minute drive and worth it if the rain lets up.

There’s also a casino if you’re feeling lucky, and the Washington Park Zoo over in Michigan City, Indiana, is a quick trip across the state line.

Things to Do with Kids in New Buffalo

If you’re in town with kids, here are a few more things to keep you busy:

The New Buffalo Township Playground and Splash Pad, right across from Galien River County Park, is a family favorite for its equipment, trails, and picnic spots (note: no dogs).

Captain Mike’s Fun Park, up by Warren Dunes, is a 5-acre amusement park with go-karts, bumper boats, batting cages, an arcade, and snacks (10975 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman, MI 49106).

Timber Town Playground at Watkins Memorial Park is another good stop to burn off energy.

And when all else fails, a lot of the local hotels have pools, including the heated indoor pool at the Holiday Inn, so a hotel swim is always on the table.

Places to Stay in New Buffalo

Neighborhood Hotel

The Neighborhood Hotel in New Buffalo is a beautiful little boutique spot just steps from downtown, and the location honestly could not be any better. You walk out the front door, take maybe 30 steps, and you are on Whittaker Street, right in the middle of everything. You can literally walk to pretty much every New Buffalo hotspot from here, so we rarely used our car, and the beach is only about a half mile walk.

The hotel is really charming, with bed and breakfast vibes but with a more modern, beachy, fresh, and relaxed feel.

There are 10 suites wrapped around a shared communal setup with a big kitchen, a four seasons room, fire pits, and an outdoor gazebo area where people can hang out if they want to be social.

Guests share a refrigerator and are encouraged to label their stuff with Post its and room numbers, which worked pretty smoothly.

They lean into the fun extras too.

There are complimentary supplies for s’mores by the fire, suntan lotion in the lobby in case you forgot yours like we did, and a nugget ice maker, and if you know, you know about the “good” kind of ice.

I was not totally sure what it would be like to share a big house with nine other couples or families, but we almost never saw anyone else, so it still felt quiet and private. Four of the suites have enclosed patios with Adirondack chairs overlooking the street, so you can sit outside with a drink and feel like you are in the middle of the New Buffalo scene without actually going anywhere.

Next Stop, New Buffalo

New Buffalo has that easy “park once and just vibe” kind of energy. You roll into town, ditch the keys, and then it is basically choose your own adventure from there.

Want a slow start? Grab coffee and wander down to Oselka Marina to watch boats and big condos with boats parked out front like cars. Feeling more like a beach day? Head straight to the sand and see how many yachts cruise past while you are swimming. Or eat your way through Whittaker Street

If you need a break from sun and crowds, you can swap the beach for the canopy walk and boardwalk at Galien River County Park and feel like you slipped into a totally different world. Or go big at Warren Dunes with food trucks, a giant beach, and dunes to climb or sandboard down.

Stay in walkable New Buffalo, and you can mix and match all of it. The real question is just: what kind of lake day are you in the mood for?
